Kelly Clarkson’s emotional latest album reveals new sides of the singer’s sound

Three years after “Break-away” made her an even bigger name than her “American Idol” victory, Kelly Clarkson is finally allowed to share her third album, “My December,” with the world. According to reports, BMG Label Group’s CEO, Clive Davis, held up the album for months due to concerns over the material.

Admittedly, Davis has discovered and signed some of the biggest names in music (Whitney Houston, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Sarah McLachlan), and everyone has bad days at the office.

But holding up the new Clarkson album? What was he thinking?

“My December” is Clarkson’s most personal, intense and emotional release to date. She wrote or co-wrote every track and fought to make sure the material saw the light of day.

Yes, “My December” is raw and much darker than its predecessors, but Clarkson sounds amazing on every song. The album may not churn out hit after hit (“Breakaway” saw the successful release of the title track, “Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” “Because of You” and “Walk Away”), but Clarkson is at the top of her game and on her own terms.

The hit debut single, “Never Again,” is along the same lines of Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill,” but with a softer edge.

“I hope the ring you gave to her turns her finger green/ I hope when you’re in bed with her, you think of me/ I would never wish bad things, but I don’t wish you well,” Ms. Clarkson lovingly sings.

“One Minute” is a song made for summer if ever there were one. The guitars are cranked up, the beat is driving, and the lyrics deal playfully with uncertainty in relationships.

The darkness rolls on, but damn, it makes for good music.

One of the album’s standout tracks is the upbeat and rocking “Hole,” but there’s some profound sadness at the core of the music.

“I’m so far from where I need to be/ I’ve given up on faith, on everything,” and “There’s a hole/ Inside of me/ It’s so cold/ Slowly killing me” are not usually the lyrics of a instant pop hit, but “Hole” may prove to be the exception.

“Don’t Waste Your Time” is a plucky talk-to-the-hand tune made for radio. In this track, Clarkson tells her ex that she doesn’t even want him as a friend because he pulls her down.

Also in the up-tempo “my man did me wrong” vibe, “Judas” deals with…wait for it…betrayal and hurt, and “Haunted” chronicles the longing for the closeness of a relationship.

The album is not all gloom and doom. “Be Still” is a tender song about two lovers meeting in the middle to make the romance work. Similarly, “Maybe” is about the hope that two former lovers might meet in the future and mend their relationship after time apart.

Clarkson unleashes her inner Pussycat Doll on “Yeah” and introduces us to sexpot Kelly, a side of her we haven’t seen before. The horns and the “You Can Leave Your Hat On” vibe make this an excellent track nestled toward the end of the album.

The final labeled track on the album (of course there is a hidden track), “Irvine,” is hauntingly beautiful. Clarkson’s songwriting is on point and her vocals ethereal and almost unreal.

Clarkson says “Irvine” was written about the depression she felt after a show in that city on her last tour. The track is a prayer, asking if God can feel her pain all the way from heaven.

If “Irvine” (and the rest of “My December,” for that matter) is the type of music we can continue to look forward to from Clarkson, then Davis can hem and haw all he wants. The girl has real talent, so shut up and get out of the way

Non mi ero accorta di questi 2 errori, JUDAS è per un amico, e HAUNTED nn parla della fine della relazione, bensì del suicidio della sua migliore amica, che casino.

Domani metto la traduzione, se non lo fa qualcuno nel frattempo
